IPTV
“If a picture is worth a thousand
words, consider just how powerful a Video is”
With
the ever growing popularity of video in every day lives, modern
educational providers are increasingly considering
how the transmission of this important medium can enable its use
as an effective teaching aid in the curriculum of tomorrow.
The
proposed IPTV system will be used to homologate the various
systems in use today so that the School / Academy will have
a single, simple to operate user interface to draw upon the currently
disparate sources of this material, whether it be from Freeview,
BSKYB, Archived Material on VHS tape or DVD, Video on Demand servers
or online sources such as the JANET network.
This will reduce the
learning time required for the teaching staff to gain familiarity
with the system and hence provide a vastly superior service and
educational environment. In addition, network administrative staff’s
time may be usefully deployed in other areas as a single system
shall require significantly less overall maintenance, thereby reducing
the burden in ongoing operational costs.
The majority of educational,
government and corporate users are adopting a Microsoft Windows
Media® based platform given its
native compatibility with a predominantly Windows based PC domain. The
proposed IPTV system for the School / Academy shall retain this
approach and shall therefore unify the differing video formats
that may be presented to the system into a Windows Media format
and may hence provide automatic interoperability with the Virtual
Learning Environment and Content editing platforms such as Windows
Movie Maker. There may be some need, depending upon the future
requirements to utilise a small proportion of the system for MPEG2,
primarily due to its inherent low latency and therefore suitability
for real time, bi directional video traffic such as conferencing.
Importantly, the use of a Windows Media Environment
shall also reduce the load on the network by reducing the high
bandwidths and undeterministic bandwidths inherent in older generation
DVB MPEG2 transmissions and make them suitable for retransmission
on the Academy’s IP network. This is especially important
if we consider that the full Freeview DVB-Terrestrial channel line
up alone (unaltered) equates to approximately 130Mbit/s of constant
and real time traffic.
Furthermore, because of the manner in which
these channels are originally statistically multiplexed, it is
impossible to define precisely the amount of bandwidth each channel
occupies from one moment to the next and this presents a real dilemma
to the network architects unless the streams are modified in some
way.
IPTV System Components
The
proposed system is based upon the highly developed EtherneTV system
from VBrick Systems, currently in operation in over 900 educational
establishments worldwide and who have recently been named as the
worldwide market leader in this domain. It provides a turn-key
digital distribution system for video, audio and rich media. The
reference diagram illustrates the various components and products
that make up an EtherneTV installation.
TV over Twisted Pair - Scion
Change your RJ45 Socket to a TV outlet.
Scion hardware broadcasts television pictures
and sound across cat3/5/5e/6 twisted pair cable delivering HD
quality. The system, plug and play has all the attributes of
a conventional SMATV solution only using twisted pair cable rather
than Co-axial. The benefits of this is it can be deployed on
to existing LAN’s without
the expensive re-cabling costs.
IPCCTV
Converged solutions open arms to IP CCTV for full network control.
IP Cameras are a competitive alternative to traditional co-axial
solutions.
UCS recommends Mobotix range of cameras with free download software
for management monitoring.
